Profile of Bobby Little OAM


In our future newsletters Vox Radio has decided to profile on some of our present and past members and presenters and in this edition, we have chosen Bobby Little to focus on.

This will be his 14th year for Bobby Little at Vox Radio on air starting as a breakfast presenter 6am-8am, then moving to noon midday to 1pm and finally on his current timeslot of 8am-10am, all programs coincidently happened to be on a Monday. He has also served on the Vox board for well over 3 years and is currently on the building and relocation committee representing Vox Radio at various meetings with Wollongong City Council, and other politicians and like-minded groups to help us in moving address. He has been a great ambassador for Vox Radio over the years and is always keen to help us out in any way he can.



Bob is a very keen sports person where he has played competitive baseball, basketball, rugby union, rugby league, cricket and table tennis.


However, his main sport where he has excelled is Surf Lifesaving where he joined Wollongong Surf Club in 1950. He has been involved as a member for well over 68 years as a competitor, instructor, examiner, official and council member of the highest level.


His highlights in his career include, 1960 – 1964 NSW Representative Surf Team to Mereweather NSW, Carlton Tasmania, Scarborough WA, and Collaroy NSW. 1976 – 1977 – 1980 NSW Representative Surf Team Coach at Clifton Tasmania, Bancoura Victoria also a European tour. 1960 – 1963 NSW Surf Board Champion at Crescent Head, Tathra, Manly and Port Kembla. 1961, 1963 and 1965 Australian Surf Board Champion at Moana SA, Warrnambool Victoria and Scarborough WA. 1986 Australian Delegation Representative Rescue 86 to Vancouver Canada. 1965 Australian Surf Team representative tour to the USA.


Bob was awarded Life membership and at all levels, Life Member Wollongong City 1972, SLS Illawarra 1977, SLS NSW 1983, SLS Australia 1993. Illawarra Sportsman of the year in 1965. SLS Australia 75th Anniversary Medal 1982. Citation of Merit World Life Saving 1991. NSW Outstanding Service Plaque in 1997. Illawarra Service Plaque 1997.  Order of Australia Medal 1999. Australian Sports Medal in 2000. Citation of Merit International Life Saving in 2001. Association Trophy for contributions to the Surf Life Saving Championships 2002.


He has been involved in all levels of Life Saving including competitor for his Club, Branch, NSW, Interstate, Australia and International. Coach in his Club, Branch and NSW. Represented Club, Branch NSW and Australia. Carnival referee Branch, Inter-branch, NSW, Interstate, Australian and International.


Bob was Illawarra Superintendent of Life Saving from 1978 – 1987 (9 years) and NSW Director of Competition and Coaching from 1994 – 1997 (4 years). In addition, he even did a stint as a commentator for the 1990 Nutri-Grain Iron Man series for the ABC-TV.
